Leveraging the Wisdom of the Crowd: Collaborative Action Plans

Conversation Description: Preparing students for the 21st Century calls for collective action of all stakeholders and this session looks at the steps needed to build momentum and garner buy-in from the entire school community. Participants will discuss ways to plan collectively and strategically for the future, develop a collective professional development plan for 21st Century skill building, and make sure all students have equitable access to a 21st century education.

Conversational Practice: This will be a fast paced, facilitated session that will result in a collaborative action plan that truly leverages the wisdom of those in attendance. The goal of the session is two-fold: 1) to develop and capture a synthesis of thinking around- barriers to the shift, proactive solutions for overcoming the barriers, and development of specific, measurable action statements that can be implemented in your local context. 2) to model a protocol that can be used to garner buy-in at your school or district for managing change.



This is a fast paced process that will enable us to plan collectively and strategically for the future. Together we will develop an action plan for shifting our curriculum, classrooms, schools and districts -- in ways that will make sure that school remains relevant for today's networked learner.


It will require all of us to work hard and fast during this 90 minutes. Every opinion counts. Together we are much more than any of us are apart.

I. Introductions and a quick setting of context- (10 min)

II. Have a facilitated discussion on barriers and restraints to managing change and shift in schools. What is preventing us from being successful at implementing change? Get into 2 groups ( 20 minutes)

Please choose a scribe that will capture bullet point ideas as they are generated. (no names will be associated with comments)

- Introduce yourself and then in round robin style address the prompt provided in 1-2 min depending on the number of learners in your group.
- Discussion will be recorded but your ideas will not be published with your name unless permission is granted in advance.
- Be as honest as possible.

III. Using the Post IT notes and working as individuals, jot down at least 5 ideas that are proactive solutions to overcoming a barrier or restraint to reculturing schools around 21st Century change. Only put 1 idea per note. You could also list innovative ideas you have for how to implement the needed change. Be creative. Think out of the box. (10 min)

IV. Working in pairs, talk together about your ideas and chunk them together under emerging categories such as: (Time, Community, Professional Development) (15 min)

V. Make sure we have all the content areas represented on the charts. Then put the sticky notes on the corresponding chart.

VI. Using the dots, choose a category you are most passionate about developing. (What you see as greatest need area) (5-7 min)

VII. Get in groups and then read and organize all the ideas represented on your chart. Then discuss to see if any group member has additional ideas to add. Talk about ideas that create excitement in the group. (15 min)

VIII. After analyzing and synthesizing the ideas represented work together as a group to wordsmith 3-5 measurable action statements around implementation of your category. In many cases you can chunk ideas you are passionate about together when crafting your action statements. (15 min)
